What are braids?
It is a salad prepared from dried pumpkin cut into long strips. The strips are dried during summer, then braided and kept until Christmas Eve when they are broken into smaller pieces and boiled for 2-3 minutes. After they are drained and cooled, season them with salt, pepper, finely chopped garlic and oil and vinegar. They are served with fish in every house in Kostajnica on Christmas Eve. They can be prepared as a salad, in any way like mushrooms, instead of regular noodles in soups, pancakes can be filled with them, breaded meat as well, just use your imagination. In Hrvatska Kostajnica they are eaten as a salad known as Braids of Kostanica.
